This evening, the FEC approved contributions via text message--something that could enhance the roll of small dollar donors in our political process.

Our friends at Maine Citizens for Clean Elections (MCCE) are out with a new report: "PACs Unlimited: How Legislator PACs Distort Maine Politics," which finds that "vast sums of big money flow through PACs controlled by legislators. These PACs exist for the purpose of advancing personal interests and party agendas, and big donors contribute to these PACs for the purpose of shaping the legislative agenda and assuring access to legislative leadership.

On Wednesday, “a House subcommittee voted to defund a Federal Communications Commission initiative announced in April that would provide online access to spending for political ads on some local television stations,” according to a report from the Sunlight Foundation. The National Association of Broadcasters, a powerful trade group with an army of lobbyists, opposes the FCC initiative.

Gov. Scott Walker (R-Wis.) survived his recall election last night, buoyed by millions in contributions from the country’s wealthiest Americans. As Mother Jones points out, Walker outraised his opponent Tom Barrett by a 7:1 margin, or $30.5 million to $4 million. Two-thirds of Walker’s money came from out-of-state.
