CongressParty Horns, Cake Optional Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Tue, 08/19/2008 - 1:09pm.
Public Campaign alum Nancy Watzman is now heading up a new project at the Sunlight Foundation. There are plenty of places that Congress member's official activities get documented but what about all that glad-handing of lobbyists off the clock? Watzman's watching. She's tracking all the thousands of parties that congressional candidates are attending and collecting checks at, including the many swanky fêtes politicos will be attending around the upcoming party conventions.
Friends of Fannie and Freddie Submitted by Jiefei Yuan on Wed, 07/16/2008 - 3:04pm.
The panic over the mortgage collapse and its wide-ranging consequences for the national and global economy led to Congress passing a $300 billion bailout plan for lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac this week just as newspapers were putting the finishing touches on their sans-serif "Apocalypse" typesettings. How nice for Fannie and Freddie that help was forthcoming in the form of a taxpayer-financed buy-out. Guess those millions they've poured into lobbying and campaign contributions through the years have paid off.
Immunity for telecoms, not from money's influence Submitted by Adam Smith on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 2:48pm.
On the recently passed FISA legislation, MapLight did the work for us and found that those who voted for the legislation granting retroactive immunity (and supported by the industry) have received nearly double the amount of money in campaign contributions from industry PACs than those who voted against.
A class act. Submitted by Adam Smith on Wed, 06/18/2008 - 8:28am.
With many in Washington still in shock over the death of Tim Russert last week, members of Congress took to the floor of the House to celebrate Russert's life by passing a resolution honoring him. Some chose to honor big oil.
Oil Money Trumps Energy Policy Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Fri, 12/14/2007 - 2:10pm.
Yesterday evening the Senate passed a watered down version of the energy bill that the House of Representatives passed last week. The oil and gas industry, and their allies in the Senate to whom they’ve given millions in campaign contributions, kept their billions in tax giveaways; while investment in alternative energy sources was deferred.
Money Spent is Money Earned Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Wed, 12/05/2007 - 4:38pm.
High profile candidates for public office are so crunched by the need to raise ever-larger sums of money to fund their campaigns that they're forking over millions to fundraising consultants who'll help collect the checks. As Christopher Cooper of the Wall Street Journal reports, the wider nets cast by these consultants are hauling in some questionable catch.

Meet Your Candidates posted by Katie Schlieper on 08-28-2008 This is an interesting story on the campaign strategies of three Republicans competing for a state House seat, two of whom are running with Clean Elections funds. Notice the story opens up with one candidate walking door to door to talk to voters -- there's Clean Elections for you! Published in: Arizona | Clean Elections Next Up, New York? posted by Katie Schlieper on 08-27-2008 Depending on how the state legislative elections results shake out in New York come November we could be looking at much improved odds for passing a Clean Elections bill there in the coming year. New York Governor David Paterson (D) is certainly a supporter of Clean Elections, if not the most outspoken on the subject, and state activists are keeping up the drumbeat for movement on legislation -- see this letter to the editor in Binghamton. Published in: Clean Elections | New York Not This Time posted by Katie Schlieper on 08-27-2008 I'm sorry to report that Alaska's Clean Elections ballot initiative did not pass yesterday -- in fact, on the primary ballot where both Sen. Ted Stevens (R) and Rep. Don Young (R) faced primary challenges none of the ballot initiatives got much love. But as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day. This is only the beginning of Alaska's fight for Clean Elections. Published in: Alaska | Clean Elections | Don Young | Ted Stevens Creative Commons
