Montana State Senator Jesse Laslovich (D) is heading up efforts in the state to win full public financing of judicial races to allow candidates to seek State Supreme Court positions without having to seek campaign contributions from groups or individuals who may have business before the court. North Carolina was the first state to adopt a Clean Elections program for judicial candidates and several other states, like Washington, are considering similar programs.

Montana State Rep. Wanda Grinde (D-Billings) has begun the work of moving HB 760, a Clean Elections bill, through the Montana legislature. Modeled on the Clean Elections systems in Maine, Arizona, and elsewhere in the country, Grinde's proposal provide a full public financing option for state legislative candidates funded by a voluntary tax check-off.

Public Financing Going to the Chapel? posted by Katie Schlieper on 05-15-2008 Speaking of North Carolina, Chapel Hill may become the state's first municipality to offer a full public financing option for city council races. The state legislature has approved the idea, now the council is debating it. Cities like Portland, Oregon and Albuquerque, New Mexico offer a full public financing option and officials in more cities (like Los Angeles and New York) are proposing similar programs as the cost of running for office goes up and closes more people out.
