Public Campaign Statement on NY's Failure to Pass a Comprehensive Public Financing System
Washington, D.C.—National campaign finance organization Public Campaign released the following statement in response to the failure by Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders to pass a comprehensive public financing package as part of the budget.
Statement from Nick Nyhart, president and CEO of Public Campaign:
"Gov. Cuomo and leaders in Albany played an April Fool's joke on New York voters a day early, offering a doomed-to-fail pilot public financing program and expecting a pat on the back. The Cuomo-initiated Moreland Commission specifically called for a comprehensive public financing system for legislative and statewide races. The governor's failure to get this done calls into question not only his leadership, but also his commitment to reducing government corruption in New York State. Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders had an opportunity to set an example for the nation, but they chose the status quo. The people of New York deserve better."
Public Campaign is a national, nonpartisan organization that fights to raise the voices of everyday people in our democracy through changing our campaign finance laws and through holding elected officials accountable for favors they do on behalf of campaign donors.
