Rep. Ron Kind Sponsors Legislation to Limit Influence of Big Money in Politics

Submitted by Adam Smith on Wed, 01/16/2013 - 18:44

Washington, D.C.—National campaign finance organization Public Campaign applauded Congressman Ron Kind (D-Wisc) today for co-sponsoring new legislation aimed at raising the voices of everyday people in the political process. Rep. Kind is an original co-sponsor of the Fair Elections Now Act (HR 269), legislation that would allow candidates to run competitive campaigns for office by relying on small dollar donors.

“After an election that saw record-setting campaign spending and big money donations, we welcome Congressman Kind’s support toward making our government truly of, by, and for the people,” said Nick Nyhart, president and CEO of Public Campaign.

The Fair Elections Now Act, introduced by Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), would allow candidates to run competitive campaigns for office on a blend of small dollar donations and matching funds. Instead of relying on Wall Street executives or lobbyists, candidates could raise money from people back home.

Kind was one of 52 original co-sponsors of the Fair Elections Now Act, which was introduced Tuesday. The bill was introduced along side two others. Press release from Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.) is available here: http://1.usa.gov/X8cC2J

“Congressman Kind knows the American people deserve a political system that works for all of us, and not just big money donors,” said Nyhart. “Fair Elections will help to do just that.”
