Congressman Dave Camp Held Vegas Fundraiser After Being Named to Supercommittee

Submitted by Adam Smith on Fri, 10/14/2011 - 17:39

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Dave Camp (R-Mich.), a member of the Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction, apparently held a fundraiser in Las Vegas in September, a clear example of skewed priorities, according to Public Campaign analysis of Camp’s third quarter campaign financing filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).

Camp raised $15,750 in donations of $200 or more on September 12th from donors and political action committees (PACs) in Nevada, including several Wynn Resort executives. He also received $6,200 in “in-kind contributions” from the casino for “catering for event.”

“Instead of focusing like he should on the important work in Washington or meeting with constituents in Michigan, Dave Camp apparently flew off to Las Vegas to raise casino money for his campaign,” said David Donnelly, national campaigns director of Public Campaign. “Vegas can place its bets on Camp, but Michigan can’t bet that Camp will be looking out for them if he’s too busy looking for big money from out of state CEOs.”

In September, Camp suggested he would not schedule additional fundraisers while serving on the committee. He said in a press conference, “My view is, anything that was scheduled before, I'm going to continue with that schedule. [But] I'm not going to add new items of a fund-raising nature.”
