Public Campaign Congratulates President-Elect Obama, Promises to Work with Him to Advance Fair Elections

Submitted by Adam_Smith on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 18:38
Washington, D.C. - Public Campaign, a leading national nonpartisan organization dedicated to passing sweeping campaign reform laws, offered their congratulations to President-Elect Barack Obama on his historic election yesterday. The organization released a background document on President-Elect Obama's support for the Fair Elections Now Act, and issued the following statement on behalf of Nick Nyhart, President and CEO, and David Donnelly, National Campaigns Director:

"We congratulate President-Elect Barack Obama on an historic, barrier-breaking victory last night. The way you won this campaign by mobilizing millions of Americans to fight for real change in Washington inspires the best of what this country has to offer.

"We look forward to working with you, your administration, and the next Congress on creating campaign finance laws so that all elections may be more contests of ideas than of the ability to raise large contributions from vested interests.

"With the great challenges facing this nation, Americans should believe that our elected officials are working for all of us, not just those who can afford to write a big check or hire a lobbyist. We appreciate your long, steadfast support for comprehensive public financing of elections, from the time you served in the state legislature in Illinois to your co-sponsorship of the bipartisan Fair Elections Now Act during your tenure in the U.S. Senate."
