PRESS RELEASE: JUDGES NARROW FINALISTS IN CONTEST TO NAME THE NEW CATEGORY OF BUSH SUPER-MEGA-FUNDRAISERS

CONTEST VOTING OPEN AT WWW.PCACTIONFUND.ORG/CONTEST/ Washington – A panel of expert judges selected five finalists in the contest to name the newest and highest level of fundraisers for President George W. Bush’s re-election campaign. Public Campaign Action Fund launched the contest – to which 1,191 entries were submitted – in late January in response to reports that the Bush campaign was soon to keep track of who raises $500,000 for the campaign. The Bush campaign already keeps records of who raises $100,000, called “Pioneers,” and $200,000, called “Rangers.” The five finalists for $500,000 bundlers are: “Cash Cowboys” “ Robber Barons” “ Weapons of Mass Corruption” “ Profiteers” “ The Funding Fathers” Public Campaign Action Fund assembled a panel of judges to review and select these five finalists. The judges are (organizations listed for identification purposes only): Joan Blades, MoveOn.org; Adonal Foyle, Golden State Warriors and Democracy Matters; Helen Hernandez, Legacy Group; Arnold Hiatt, Stride Rite Foundation; Jim Hightower; Craig Holman, Public Citizen; Arianna Huffington; Michael Kieschnick, Working Assets; George Lakoff, UC-Berkeley; Malia Lazu, Institute for Policy Studies; Matt MacWilliams, MacWilliams Robinson and Partners; William McNary, US Action and Citizen Action Illinois; Ellen Miller, TomPaine.com; Nick Nyhart, Public Campaign Action Fund; Edward James Olmos; Chellie Pingree, Common Cause; Phil T. Rich (a.k.a. Andrew Boyd), Billionaire for Bush; and Katrina vanden Heuvel, The Nation. Voting for the contest is already underway at http://www.pcactionfund.org/contest/ and will continue through the end of February. Public Campaign Action Fund will announce what it will do to popularize and publicize the winning entrant by the end of the voting. Public Campaign Action Fund is dedicated to comprehensive reform of our nation’s campaign finance laws, and to holding elected officials accountable for the special favors they give their political contributors.
