Campaign site an outgrowth of contest to name President Bush’s super-mega-fundraisers
Washington, DC—Public Campaign Action Fund is proud to announce that its Weapons of Mass Corruption page (http://masscorruption.pcactionfund.org) was chosen by AboutPolitics.com as the Political Site of the Day this morning. The webpage is the result of a two month long contest to name the category of donors who raise $500,000 or more for President Bush’s re-election campaign.
“Americans are fed up with big money politics and the most egregious example of influence-peddling is the bundling of huge amounts of money for the presidential campaigns,” commented Nick Nyhart, Public Campaign Action Fund executive director.
“While this contest was humorous, the problem of special interest money in politics is very serious. From out-of-control health costs, to environmental degradation that hurts public health, to tax policies that benefit the donor class, the way campaigns are funded helps those who buy access with their contributions, and hurts the rest of us,” Nyhart continued.
The contest attracted 1,191 entries. A panel of prominent judges – including pro basketball player Adonal Foyle, columnist and author Arianna Huffington, and actor Edward James Olmos – narrowed the list to five finalists. The winning name “Weapons of Mass Corruption” was chosen from a public on-line vote of more than 6,000 participants. It was submitted by Mary Rocco of Los Angeles.
The Weapons of Mass Corruption page allows visitors to send emails to President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry to ask them to reveal the names of those who have raised $500,000 or more for their campaigns.
The Washington, DC-based Public Campaign Action Fund is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing comprehensive campaign finance reform.
