Public Campaign Applauds ABA for Adaptation of Public Financing of Judicial Elections
Washington, D.C. - Today, Nick Nyhart, Executive Director of Public Campaign, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to passing comprehensive campaign finance reform, applauded the American Bar Association's adoption of a resolution supporting the public financing of judicial elections.
"Affording candidates of judicial elections an opportunity to run without having to accept special interest contributions is imperative to maintaining an impartial judicial system," said Nyhart. "The mere appearance of special interest money influencing judicial decisions threatens the legitimacy of the third pillar of our democracy. The ABA has taken an important step by endorsing a system that says 'yes' to clean publicly financed judicial elections.
"Clean Elections campaign reform has worked in Maine and Arizona. It has removed special interest dollars and given the legislatures in these two states back to the people. Such reform is as important in courthouses as state houses. This action by the ABA will help us in our fight to ensure that our judicial system remains fair and just by working to pass impartial justice campaign reform across the country."
