Push for Voter Owned Elections in Oklahoma
In Oklahoma, State Rep. Richard Morrissette (D) has introduced legislation that would create a publicly financed Voter-Owned Elections system. Morrissette's bill has support from the League of Women Voters, Oklahhoma Common Cause, the Brennan Center for Justice, county officials, and Public Campaign, among others.
At a recent event at the State Capitol, Public Campaign President Nick Nyhart submitted a statement praising the Public Financing Act of 2011 "as way to give 'everyday Oklahomans a greater voice in the electoral process and bring a state government that is truly of, by and for the people.'"
Morrissette, who kicked off the event, is determined to bring more people into the political process. "He wants to get 'average folks that are interested in running for office [who] don’t feel comfortable going out soliciting large amounts of money from large donors, corporations, unions, wealthy people. Instead of spending time raising money, they’re spending time talking to their constituents.'"
