Clips Round-up for 3/1/2013

Submitted by mrober@publicam... on Fri, 03/01/2013 - 15:04

Yesterday, the NRSC launched a new website blasting President Obama for OFA and "selling access" to the White House. If Republicans are upset about OFA and special interest influence, they should probably offer up policy solutions to address their concerns, we say.

Campaign Finance/Fair Elections
Campaign Insider: McCutcheon decision unlikely to aid candidates
If the Court decides to throw out aggregate limits, consultants think it won't necessarily aid candidates--but it'll sure make it easier on those put-upon donors when it comes to knowing who to give to. Wendy Kaminer at The Atlantic on McCutcheon. And here's what it could mean at the state level.

The Villager: It's time to reform Albany's campaign finance system
NY State Senator Brad Hoylman on the need for Fair Elections and other reforms in New York. SUNY Geneseo Democracy Matters is pushing for reform too. And Bill Samuels says: "It is time for [Cuomo] to lead, not just talk like he did on independent redistricting.”

CPI: NYC Public Advocate: state, local governments must lead efforts to regulate dark money
"Local jurisdictions should take the lead in regulating politically active nonprofit organizations, according to a new report slated for publication today by New York City Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and the Coalition for Accountability in Political Spending."

AP: Hawaii committee advances bills to reform campaign finance
There's some good work going on in Hawaii on campaign finance and public financing.

Roll Call: Has power tipped in favor of high court?
"Just as members have been increasingly willing to criticize high-court decisions that don’t comport with their own interpretation of the law, the justices have shown in recent high-profile cases a willingness to parry back. The problem for lawmakers is that, at the end of the day, the justices likely have the upper hand."

NYT: Decision on voting law could limit oversight
This will end well: If Section 5 is thrown out or gutted "there will be far less scrutiny of thousands of decisions each year about redrawing district lines, moving or closing polling places, changing voting hours or imposing voter identification requirements in areas that have a history of disenfranchising minority voters, voting law experts say." And you should just generally be checking the Election Law Blog on VRA reactions (among other things).

Congress/Admin
WaPo: Even in tough times, K Streeters know where to find business
Defense lobbyist on sequestration, etc: "If the pie is shrinking, a lot of people decide they have to put more resources into getting their share of the pie." One says it'll be "hand-to-hand combat."

WaPo: GOP Rep. Peter King: Don't donate to Marco Rubio
Steve King is still angry about the handling of the Hurricane Sandy aid package "and now he’s calling on his fellow New Yorkers not to donate any money to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)," who has been making the rounds on Wall Street.

The Hill: Speaker Boehner's right-hand man heads to K Street in blockbuster hire
Big get for them: "Barry Jackson, a long-time senior adviser to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), is heading to K Street. Jackson has agreed to join Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck as a strategic adviser, delivering a coup to one of the top-earning lobby firms in Washington." Here's Brownstein's 2012 clients.

Republic Report: Who built Senator-turned-drty energy lobbyist Trent Lott? You did.
David Halperin: "What I mean is that Members of Congress, congressional staff members, and other federal officials are increasingly using their tenures as paid public servants to qualify themselves to be lobbyists for corporations, including dirty energy firms."

Politico: Pro-Romney super PAC Restore Our Future finds $700,000 payment to fundraiser
"The pro-Mitt Romney super PAC Restore Our Future failed to disclose $700,000 it paid to a fundraiser who had drawn criticism during the 2012 presidential campaign for charging excessive fees."

The New Republic: Why did Democrats give Jack Lew a pass?
Alex MacGillis notes all of Jack Lew's Wall Street ties and that he basically got a pass on it.

Sunlight: Shalemanship: Ralph Hall's energy act might have benefited his own bottom line
Is Ralph Hall pushing energy legislation that would bolster his own investments?

Buzzfeed: A former lawmaker on what House of Cards gets right and what it gets wrong
And just for fun, a former lawmaker talks about House of Cards and writes, "I saw transactional sex as a legislator. However, the journalist/legislator pair strikes me as unlikely; legislator/staff and legislator/lobbyist were more frequent pairings, and you could often see the dividends it paid for both parties."

Other/States
Politico: Anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony list endorses Ken Cuccinelli
"The anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List endorsed Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli in the state’s gubernatorial race, committing $1.5 million to the Republican candidate’s campaign and in the process drawing criticism from Democrats."

PolitickerNJ: Healy says he'll return money from questionable fundraiser
"Jersey City Mayor Jerry Healy, facing accusations that his campaign sought to circumvent campaign finance rules at a fundraiser Wednesday, is returning all of the money raised at the event."

Denver Post: RMGO gun lobbyist Joe Neville slapped with ethics complaint, hearing is Friday
"The lobbyist for Colorado’s most in-your-face gun rights group will learn Friday whether he faces an ethics investigation after a run-in with a fellow Republican over the fate of the first four gun bills introduced this session."
