Submitted by mrober@publicam... on Fri, 02/15/2013 - 15:11

Check your local listings for the latest episode of Moyers & Company, which features Friends of Democracy's Jonathan Soros and Working Families Party's Dan Cantor. Here's the preview for the episode, "The Fight to Keep Democracy Alive."

And, House freshman and corporate PACs are fast friends, USA Today reports: "Political action committee donations to new House members spiked immediately after Election Day, as industries and special-interest groups moved quickly to ingratiate themselves with the new crop of lawmakers, a USA TODAY analysis shows."

Campaign Finance/Fair Elections
Common Cause: In the matter of the Hagel filibuster
Great stuff from Steve Spaulding on the Hagel filibuster, including Sen. John Cornyn quote from years ago about how it's "unconstitutional" to filibuster presiddential nominees. "I told you so." - Jeff Merkley, basically.

HuffPost: A good start on voting reform, but let's get on with it.
Bob Edgar on the voting commission: "The danger here is that the momentum for reform growing out of stories like Ms.Victor's could be squandered if Congress, the administration, and state legislatures sit idle while the commission conducts a protracted study of voting problems."

NYT: Election opponents now on same team: panel to fix voting
New York Time on the election commission, interviews with Dan Pfieffer and League of Women Voter's Elisabeth MacNamara. Orlando Sentinel. House Admin Chair Candice Miller: "I do not support the President’s proposal to appoint yet another national commission to study solutions to the problem of long lines at polling places that seems to be confined to very few states."

Adam Schiff: Rep. Schiff introduces constitutional amendment permitting regulation of campaign spending
Release: "Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) today reintroduced a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's ill-considered opinion in Citizens United, and other Supreme Court precedent, which have made it impossible to regulate the billions in campaign spending unleashed over the last two decades." HuffPost interview, Glendale News-Press.

Chicago Tribune: Super PACs, the story the election didn't tell
Did super PACs lose? Can Americans stop worrying about money in politics? Congressman John Sarbanes and Larry Lessig: "Such a view — particularly with congressional campaigns — ignores the most damaging aspects of the big-money phenomenon. The real story goes beyond Election Day and is much more destructive than you know."

WSJ: Supreme opportunity to build on Citizens United
Op-ed from anti-common sense campaign finance rules lawyer Brad Smith on upcoming SCOTUS decisions: "How aggressively the Supreme Court will continue to protect free speech rests on three cases currently before the court, at least two of which—Danielczyk v. United States and McCutcheon v. FEC—are scheduled for conference on Friday, when the justices will decide whether to put them on the calendar for full argument."

Congress/Administration
HuffPost: Get politicians on the record about corruption
Lawrence Lessig and Nick Penniman on a new "On the Record project," to get members of Congress to talk corruption. "We can no longer afford to have our public officials remain silent on this crucial issue. They should no longer be allowed to duck it, or to act is if there is no mandate to fix the problem."

LAT: Obama advocacy group OFA solicits high-dollar bundlers for support
Organizing for Action is hitting up Obama campaign bundlers for donations. Story also has this on transparency: "Messina and Carson told attendees that the group would disclose donors on a quarterly basis, although the organization is not required to do so under law. Exact contributions will not be listed; rather, donors will be listed under different ranges of contributions."

CRP: Debt on the Hill: Some lawmakers face fiscal cliff of their own
Great new report from the Center for Responsive Politics on the members of Congress who are in debt and "face fiscal cliff of their own." Rep. Vern Buchanan, for example, owes "between $5 million and $25 million for the purchase of a Lear Jet." (!)"

NaJo: Lindsay Graham allies will form super PAC
"Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., will have a friendly super PAC on his side during his 2014 reelection campaign."

Politico: Proof positive: need to dial back ads
AFL-CIO and Atlas Project op-ed looks at the value of negative ads and the Warren-Senate race and the outside spending pledge.

Roll Call: Menendez's ties to donor under further scrutiny
"Sen. Robert Menendez continues to be hammered in media reports this week, with scrutiny expanding beyond alleged rendezvous with prostitutes and his cozy relationship with longtime doctor-donor friend Salomon Melgen."

Record: Lautenberg says he'll retire at end of Senate term
Not quite as eloquent as John Kerry on the subject: "'You know I don't like fund-raising,' the 89-year-old millionaire, who has contributed extensively to his own campaigns in winning a record five terms representing New Jersey, told The Record in his office Thursday afternoon."

Sunlight: Merger of American Airlines, US Airways creates lobbying titan
"While the two carriers' agreement to create the world's largest airline must win approval of federal regulators, they will have plenty of chits to draw on and an amazing array of former insiders to make to their case to Congress and the Obama administration of the wisdom of their plan. "

CREW: So long, and thanks for all the cash
Ohh: "Retiring members of Congress are again dipping into leftover campaign funds to pay family members, foot travel bills, and make some questionable charitable contributions."

Politico: Study: 3 million political ads in 2012
"TV viewers were bombarded with more than 3 million ads related to the presidential and congressional elections in 2012, the Wesleyan Media Project reported Thursday. The ads on broadcast and national cable television between Jan. 1, 2012, and Election Day cost an estimated $1.92 billion."

Politico: Obama meets 47% video guy
Yesterday, President Obama met James Carter (President Carter's grandson), the guy who released the Romney 47% fundraiser video. "Thank you, thank you so much," Obama said to him.

HuffPost: Ed Markey, Stephen Lynch sign pledge to restrict outside money in Mass. special election
Markey and Lynch signed the pledge, but at least one of the three Republicans in the race has said he won't.

NYDN: Mitt Romney’s sons Matt and Craig attend fundraiser for N.J. Gov. Chris Christie: report
No hard feelings, dude! "Two of Mitt Romney’s sons were among the guests at a California fundraiser for Gov. Chris Christie this week, suggesting that both camps have put the bitter end of the November election behind them."

Politico: Complaint of Rove group actions goes nowhere
"The Federal Election Commission has deadlocked in the case alleging coordination between Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS group and Roy Blunt’s 2010 Senate campaign."

CPI: Lobbyist PACs hurting for cash following election
"The 2012 election, the most expensive on record, left the political action committees of many top lobbying firms hurting for cash, a Center for Public Integrity analysis of Federal Election Commission records indicates."

Politico: Super PAC attacks Rangel, Bachus again
The Campaign for Primary Accountability is back, going after Rangel and Bachus again

Portland Press Herald: FEC audit faults Maine Republicans for record-keeping violations
"A federal audit released Thursday faults the Maine Republican Party for a long list of record-keeping violations in 2007 and 2008, including filing inaccurate reports on spending and debts."

Other/States
HuffPost: In Virginia governor's race, super PAC candidate coordination can occur legally
No coordination rules in VA: "Beware, Virginia. While federal limits restrict these groups in federal elections, they don't apply to the state's marquee gubernatorial contest this year. "

Florida Current: Campaign expert finds House fundraising proposal troubling
Adam Skaggs on the campaign finance changes Florida is considering.

LA Times: Donor fined for laundering LA campaign contributions
"A donor to the mayoral campaigns of City Controller Wendy Greuel and council members Eric Garcetti and Jan Perry was fined $170,000 on Thursday by the Los Angeles Ethics Commission for laundering dozens of campaign contributions."
