PRESS RELEASE: New York Gov. Cuomo Calls For New York City-style Public Financing Of Elections For State

Submitted by John Papagiannis on Wed, 01/09/2013 - 21:23

In his State of the State address today, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo pledged his support for the legislature to pass publicly financed Fair Elections legislation to curb the influence of big money in New York politics.

Cuomo in his SoS: "...we need to implement a public finance system like in New York City. It works well there, and it will work well for the state too.“

Public Campaign issued a statement lauding Cuomo for his continued backing of this much needed reform.

From the statement: “By proposing—and passing--a system that emphasizes the voice of small donors in our elections, Gov. Cuomo and the legislature would serve as national leaders in efforts to restore our government to one that is truly of, by, and for the people,” said Nick Nyhart, president and CEO of Public Campaign. “After an election marred by unprecedented campaign spending and seven-and eight-figure checks, New Yorkers and the American people are ready for change.”
