Clips round up for 10/31/2012

Submitted by John Papagiannis on Wed, 10/31/2012 - 16:01

Jack Gillum at AP pulls together the top donors to the Obama and Romney campaigns (and super PACs). Obama: Fred Eychaner, James Simons, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Irwin Jacobs, Jon Stryker. Romney: Shel Adelson, Harold Simmons, Bob Perry, Robert Rowling, Bill Koch.

The Hill has released its "Top Lobbyists." Several friends of this list on the "Grassroots" section.

And, did you miss the Frontline episode, "Big Sky, Big Money" last night? You can watch it here.

Campaign Finance/Fair Elections
Politico: Why House races need small donors
Brennan Center's Adam Skaggs and Sundeep Iye: r"But there’s another troubling trend in the campaign finance figures from these toss-up races: that candidates rely heavily on big money, while small donors play an exceptionally small role in funding congressional races — even the most competitive ones."

Congress/2012
WaPo: Millions pouring into tight Senate races
"With the Senate majority potentially in the balance, tens of millions of dollars have poured into more than a dozen states for the final push in an unusually large cluster of competitive races."

CPI/CRP: Super PACs, nonprofits helped Romney narrow fundraising edge with Obama
"Super PACs and nonprofits unleashed by the Citizens United Supreme Court decision have spent more than $840 million on the 2012 election, with the overwhelming majority favoring Republicans, particularly GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney." PC's Nick Nyhart: "When elected officials rely on the most-wealthy of wealthy Americans, it means the voices of everyday people lose out."

HuffPost: Jack Gerard, top oil lobbyist, positioned to be key player in a Romney administration
Who would serve in a Romney administration? Peter Stone has some details. "All roads lead to Jack," one lobbyist said of Jack Gerard, the head of American Petroleum Institute.

The Hill: Pro-Romney super PAC to spend $20M on final ad barrage
Restore Our Future finishes big, dropping $20M to oppose Obama. NYT.

WaPo: Head of Crossroads GPS once a McConnell aide, now his ally
A look at Steven Law, the head of Crossroads: "After more than a decade working side by side, the two men rarely talk these days. But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Steven Law, his trusted former aide, remain a powerful combined force in Washington."

CRP: Outside groups outspend candidates in 26 House races
"That makes the contest one of 26 House elections in which outside spending adds up to more than spending by the candidates, according to Center for Responsive Politics data. "

CRP: Congressional candidates draw one campaign super PACs
"Candidate-specific super PACs, once exclusively associated with presidential hopefuls, have moved down-ticket and are now supporting candidates in congressional races this election."

WaPo: Warfare wages by the upper class
Katrina vanden Heuvel's latest column: "In an era of Gilded Age inequality, we’ve witnessed the first act of class warfare waged by the upper class. Wall Street bankers, miffed that they weren’t worshiped after blowing up the economy and getting bailed out by taxpayers, anted up millions to displace President Obama. Running for reelection, Sen. Sherrod Brown, a tribune for working people, witnessed more than $30 million in outside money — much of it anonymous — flood Ohio with negative ads against him."

CRP: Nonprofits, shell corporations help shield identity of ad backers
"n the 2012 election, nonprofits have been the preferred vehicle for donors who prefer to keep their identities secret. But with the right lawyers, super PACs, which are supposedly transparent about their donors, can accomplish the same feat."

Media Matters: Sorry Drudge, the Obama campaign is not accepting contributions from Osama Bin Laden
LOL: "Right-wing media are ignoring anti-fraud protections the Obama campaign has in place to allege that the Obama campaign accepted donations from someone impersonating Osama bin Laden. "

Roll Call: K Street lobbyists ready for post-Sandy disaster aid requests
"While official Washington remained closed today, lobbyists said they were already working with clients from big financial institutions to small East Coast towns in storm-ravaged areas to assess what they might ask of the federal government when it reopens Wednesday."

LA Times: Rep. Nancy Pelosi: Last stand or stunning comeback?
Interesting tidbit in this Leader Pelosi profile: "Over the last 22 months, Pelosi has participated in more than 650 fundraising events, raising nearly $72 million for House Democrats. Since 2002, she has raised nearly $315 million for Democrats."

Marketplace: Chevron-powered super PAC helps Ohio Congressman
"After Rep. Jim Renacci, R-Ohio, cancelled more than $800,000 in network television advertising last week, the conservative Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC stepped in to fill the void." The DCCC is calling foul on coordination grounds.

Sun Journal: Rove-founded super PAC attacks King in Senate race
Crossroads: "Just when it appeared outside spending was slowing, a super political action committee said Tuesday that it's making another major ad buy in the final stretch of the race for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe's empty seat in Maine."

NaJo: American Crossroads going up in Nebraska
I imagine this is not where Rove planned on spending money this week: "American Crossroads is going on the air in Nebraska for the final week of the Senate campaign, according to a source tracking media buys. It's a signal that Republicans are concerned about state Sen. Deb Fischer's prospects in the wake of recent polling showing a closer race with former Democratic Sen. Bob Kerrey."

Durango Herald: Driller starts super PAC to support Tipton
A Texas driller, with interests in Scott Tipton's district has funded a super PAC to support Scott Tipton. "The Colorado Future Fund lists its address at Zakhem Law in Denver. The firm’s president, John Zakhem, is also the lawyer for Tipton’s re-election campaign."

Miami Herald: Suspected David Rivera ringer pleads the 5th in federal campaign letter
"A former Congressional candidate at the center of an FBI probe tied to Rep. David Rivera has filed blank federal campaign-finance reports and a letter saying he would remain silent to avoid incriminating himself."

Sunlight: Controversial Arizona nonprofit drops $1 million against Obama
The secret group that just made a $11 million donation against a ballot initiative in California: "In the past week, a GOP-led dark money group from Arizona that had barely spent any money on federal races has dropped more than $1.2 million to oppose President Barack Obama, as well as $60,000 to oppose Utah’s only House Democrat, Jim Matheson. "

CPI: Who wins with Medicare Advantage?
Wendell Potter notes the PCAF/HCAN report on insurance industry cash in this opinion piece. "A recent analysis of Public Campaign Action Fund (PCAF) and the health reform advocacy group Health Care for America Now showed that members of Congress who voted for Ryan’s plan have received almost twice as much in campaign contributions from the insurance industry this election cycle as members who voted against it ($14 million to $7.4 million). That’s understandable when you consider the windfall insurers would receive."

Sunlight: Americans for Tax Reform spends big on House races
Lobbyist Grover Norquist and his Americans for Tax Refor, "is flooding several House races with more than $14 million in independent expenditures this month."

Other/States
Free Press: Whose money will win the Michican Supreme Court?
"However close the final tally, Michiganders are likely to know within hours after the polls close who won the presidency. But they may never find out who won the contest for control of the Michigan Supreme Court."

Palm Beach Post: Architect of felon voter purge behind Florida’s new limits
"The Republican attorney who engineered the 2000 Florida felons list, which African American leaders said purged thousands of eligible blacks from voter rolls in the state and helped swing that election to the GOP, also wrote the first draft of Florida’s controversial House Bill 1355 that has restricted early voting and voter registration campaigns in 2012."
