Washington Post: FEC should encourage small donations

Submitted by Adam Smith on Wed, 08/01/2012 - 13:34

The Washington Post editorialized in support of text message campaign contributions today, noting that, "In an election cycle marked by the emergence of multimillion-dollar contributions, everything possible should be done to encourage small-money donors. Such a proposal is now before the Federal Election Commission (FEC), which is being called on to clear the way for campaigns to solicit and receive donations through text message."

The Post is right and we have strongly supported recent proposals approved by the FEC to allow these donations. Now, the agency needs to go a step further and resolve issues brought up by wireless companies so campaigns can start using this option to increase small donor giving to their campaign.

As Public Campaign President Nick Nyhart said on the FEC's original approval of text message donations: “With billionaires and super-PACs drowning out the voices of hardworking Americans, text message campaign contributions can enhance the role of small donors and, combined with public matching funds, could provide a megaphone for the masses."

Stay tuned.
