Public Campaign Joins Reform Groups Urging a "NO" Vote on Bill to End Presidential Public Financing
Public Campaign joined 10 other reform groups, including Common Cause and People for the American Way, in sending a letter to Congress urging members to vote "NO" on H.R. 3463, legislation that would repeal the presidential public financing system and terminate the Election Assistance Commission.
From the letter: "The presidential public financing system worked well for the nation for most of its existence, providing presidential candidates with the funds needed to mount viable candidacies without becoming indebted to special-interest influence money. The system became outmoded in recent years as a result of Congress failing to take any action to update the system and respond to the increased costs of running a presidential campaign."
A vote on the bill is likely to take place tomorrow in the House of Representatives. In addition to the letter, Public Campaign Action Fund (PCAF) issued a press release yesterday calling on the bill's lead sponsor, Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss), to work to improve, not eliminate the presidential system.
From the PCAF release: “The people of Mississippi want politicians that represent them, not Washington special interests,” said PCAF's David Donnelly. “With so much money flooding into our elections, the last thing Harper should be doing is pushing legislation to make it even easier to buy our politicians.”
