The Chronicles of Money, Politics, and Good Riddance to an Old Nemesis

Submitted by John Papagiannis on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 18:17

Here's a recap of Public Campaign and Public Campaign Action Fund's (PCAF) work from November 7 through November 18, 2011.

  • "We won't get fooled again?" Public Campaign, along with US Action, released a new report today: Fool Me Twice: Corporations Pay Congress to Rip Off Taxpayers Again. The report examines efforts by many of the nation’s largest corporations to secure another “tax holiday” that would allow them to return hundreds of billions of dollars in profits from off-shore tax havens to the U.S. at a sharply lower tax rate.
  • Friendly skies? On Wednesday, Public Campaign Action Fund (PCAF) sent letters to 20 members of Congress who have received substantial campaign cash from Delta asking whether they've gotten any other perks that ordinary Americans cannot access. Here's the press release PCAF issued when the letters went out.
  • These people should be locked up. Also on Wednesday, PCAF, along with PICO (People Improving Communities through Organizing), released a new report: Unholy Alliance: How the private prison industry is corrupting our democracy and promoting mass incarceration.

    Excerpt from the report:

"...the reality is that private prison lobbyists regularly buy influence with state and federal officials, not only to win lucrative contracts, but also to change or preserve policies that increase the number of people behind bars."

  • "You can't evict an idea whose time has come." When news broke of the eviction of the Occupy Wall Street protesters, PCAF issued this statement, standing in solidarity with the 99%.
  • Testing, testing, one, two, one two...Wall Street lap dog Eric Cantor was "mic checked" in Houston by members of the Occupy movement on Monday. PCAF blogged about it.
  • By the 1%, for the 1%. Karl Rove's Super PAC Crossroads GPS went after Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren last week. The ad is for Sen. Scott Brown, who has taken a ton of Wall Street campaign money. PCAF responded to the ad with this statement.
  • Baucus' Wall Street-backed opposition to financial regulation comes home to roost. Rep. Spencer Baucus' (R-Ala.) county just went bankrupt. Thanks to Wall Street, his campaign account never will.
  • Subsidizing campaign accounts to keep wasteful taxpayer subsidies. Last week, PCAF, along with Oil Change International released a new report on the fossil fuel industry's giving to supercommittee members. The report, Payback Time? The Supercommittee & Fossil Fuel Subsidies, comes on the heels of news reports that the American Petroleum Institute has launched a television advertising blitz in the Republican supercommittee states of Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania to ensure that those Committee members vote to maintain costly and outdated subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.
  • Good riddance! PCAF helped oust corrupt Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce (R) in his recall election last week. His special interest ties and Fiesta Bowl corruption were the issues that sent him packing.
  • We're tired of hearing that crap, Joe! Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) flew off the handle at a meeting with constituents last week. What was his problem? His constituents had the nerve to blame Wall Street for nearly destroying our economy.
  • Going to bat for the 1%. House Oversight Committee Chair Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) launched yet another probe last week. This time, going after a New York community group after a make believe Fox News report on Occupy Wall Street organizers.
  • Of all people, he would know. Our old friend jack Abramoff, fresh out of the clink, appeared on 60 Minutes last Sunday, and was brutally honest about our pay-to-play system in Washington, D.C.
  • When the health of campaign accounts comes before the health of constituents. Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Dan Coats (R-Ind.) introduced legislation last week to “delay compliance deadlines on two major EPA rules: cross-state air pollution and power-plant mercury standards,” according to the National Journal. A delay in these compliance deadlines may be bad for the health of the American people, but it will probably improve the health of Coats and Manchin’s campaign bank accounts. Public Campaign has this to say on the proposal.
