The Chronicles of Money, Politics, and Third Quarter Fundraising

Submitted by mrober@publicam... on Fri, 10/21/2011 - 20:59

Here's a recap of Public Campaign and Public Campaign Action Fund's (PCAF) work from October 17 through October 21, 2011.

  • Third quarter fundraising filings show that many supercommittee members are raking in the campaign cash. Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) got cozy with financial interests, Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) was occupied by Wall Street money, and Reps. Dave Camp (R-Mich.) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.) took cash from Wall Street, Big Oil, and insurance interests.

  • Big Oil was making big donations to a lot of members in the third quarter. In addition to filling the coffers of Reps. Camp and Upton, Rep. Rob Bishop (R-Utah), and Rep. Scott Tipton (R-Colo.) also saw the money pour in.

  • Not to be outdone by Big Oil, Public Campaign and the New Bottom Line found that the financial sector gave $371,000 to House supercommittee members in the third quarter.

  • The good news from the third quarter filings? Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) stuck to his pledge to give up fundraising for himself.

  • Speaking of supercomittee members, it seems that Co-Chair Jeb Hensarling (R-Ohio) has decided to offer a season pass to his fundraising events in 2011.

  • Cash for access anyone? Georgia Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R) promises one-on-one meetings with donors as long as they "participate" in his one fundraiser per quarter.

  • Will Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) be fundraising around his income inequality speech? That's what Public Campaign Action Fund and Virginia Organizing want to find out.
