Here's a recap of Public Campaign and Public Campaign Action Fund's (PCAF) work from September 19-September 23, 2011.

• If only the scrutiny of Wall Street and the financial sector were as strong as the scrutiny of financial industry regulations. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), the ranking Republican member on the Senate Banking Committee, introduced legislation yesterday that would essentially weaken or slow the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform legislation passed in 2010. It's no surprise that Sen. Shelby continues to receive huge amounts of campaign cash from the financial industry.

• "If you're not at the table, you're on the menu." The unfortunate reality of the supercommittee is that the lobbyist who said that is right. But that's not the only problem.

• All the unregulated pollution in the world couldn't cover up this blatant tit-for-tat. Congressman Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) is pushing an amendment that would further delay the implementation of EPA rules regarding power plants, something that a spokesman from Clean Air Watch “called a ‘hair-raising prospect’ given the ‘massive’ pollution from coal-fired power plants.” PCAF did a little digging, and surprise, electric utility donors are Whitfield's largest campaign contributors.

• The best defense is a good offense? Brave New Foundation, along with Alternet and Salon have documented how the Democrats on the "supercommittee" have actually received far more defense industry campaign cash than the Republicans serving on the supercommittee. Surprising? Yes. 

• The "contest" where the winners are actually losers. The Center for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has released their seventh annual Most Corrupt report, highlighting the most corrupt members of Congress.

• Sugar industry to Congress: "Sweeeeeeeet!" By giving huge sums of campaign cash to members of Congress (and state legislatures), Big Sugar continues to take in taxpayer subsidies and fight off regulations.
