Public Campaign Letter to Joint Hearing Co-chairs Urges Disclosure, Calls for Fair Elections
Public Campaign sent a letter today to Reps. Darrell Issa and Sam Graves, who are co-chairing a joint hearing by the Oversight and Government Reform and Small Business Committees on President Obama’s proposed executive order concerning disclosure of political activity by certain government contractors.
The letter urges the joint committee chairs to accept President Obama's proposal to disclose the campaign donations of large government contractors, and also calls on them to go further with the Fair Elections Now Act, currently before Congress.
From the letter: "...Far from chilling speech, such transparency measures are important to maintain what little public trust remains in our political process. Transparency, though, isn’t enough. Congress must also ensure that the voices of everyday Americans are heard louder than the millions of dollars spent by Wall Street and other special interests. To make elected officials accountable to their constituents, and not big campaign contributors hoping for returns on their investments, Congress should also move forward with the Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1404)."
In the wake of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling, Congress has failed to act in any meaningful way, forcing the President to take action. The American people have shown that they not only want to know who is contributing to candidates and outside spending groups, but they also want to fundamentally reform the way we fund campaigns. The President's proposal, along with the Fair Elections Now Act would accomplish both of those things.
