With Eyes on 2012, Lawmakers Kickoff Fundraisers
Though the 2012 elections may be 22 months away, this hasn't stopped members of Congress from getting down to the business of raising campaign cash. Many lawmakers have started to focus on fundraising just days into the 112th Congress, with some even holding events before being sworn in."This is how members are welcomed to Washington," said Nancy Watzman, who tracks political fundraisers for the non-partisan Sunlight Foundation. "Lawmakers hold out their hands, and lobbyists pull out their checkbooks."This constant race for campaign cash that members of Congress are compelled to take part in leaves less and less time for what really matters: the voters.
