Don't Use First Amendment as Cloak of Secrecy

Submitted by Monica Rober on Fri, 12/10/2010 - 18:53

Edward Fitzpatrick of The Providence Journal addresses conservative lawyer James Bopp's efforts to use the first amendment to shield his clients' giving practices. Fitzpatrick argues that the first amendment should not be used to grant donors anonymity and make information less accessible. "But if you’re trying to sway elections or change laws, I say: stand up and be counted. The First Amendment doesn’t give you a right to anonymous speech or to avoid criticism. As Partington said, 'The First Amendment was never meant to provide someone with a cloak to hide behind.'"Click here to read the full article.
