We Need More Citizen Participation

Submitted by Monica Rober on Fri, 09/10/2010 - 18:44

In a recent article in the Boston Review, David Donnelly, campaign manager for the Campaign for Fair Elections, notes that it's time to focus on creating a more participatory democracy - placing emphasis on making voters a key part of the process."Reformers need to shift away from ‘getting big money out of campaigns’ and toward ‘getting the people back in.’"...Against a big problem like the corruption of our democratic institutions, we cannot rely solely on a new regime of laws to shape the flow of money. We must attract more citizen participation and ensure that the voices of average people are heard. Institutional corruption would then give way to institutional ownership, which is, after all, what the framers envisioned."Click here to read the full article in the Boston Review.
