Murkowski blocks Gulf spill legislation, takes Big Oil cash
In response to the Gulf oil, members of Congress have introduced legislation that would lift the economic liability cap for oil companies from $75 million to $10 billion. Yesterday, when the Senate tried to move forward with a vote on the legislation, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski blocked it. Sen. Murkowski is a big recipient of oil and gas campaign cash, taking over $400,000 during her time in office. As I told Politics Daily today, "You can't be sure what her motivation is -- it could be a lot of things. But the fact that she receives so much money from oil and gas does make people wonder. I think that's the problem with the current system is that members have to spend their days regulating these industries, and then at night take money from them at fundraisers." Public Campaign president Nick Nyhart talked about this issue at the DISCLOSE Act hearing last week, saying what's to stop BP and other oil companies from increasing their political spending to influence lawmakers. There will be more on this next week--stay tuned.
