An Open Letter From Former Members of Congress
Thirty former members of Congress signed an open letter to Washington, D.C., urging bold change. The letter, which appeared today in Roll Call, highlighted the need to move away from a campaign finance system that places such a high emphasis on dialing-for-dollars. "We remember all too well the countless hours spent ‘dialing for dollars’ and attending fundraisers. From our collective experience, fundraising is one of the worst parts of serving in public office, and it has only gotten worse since we served. The current campaign finance system serves no one well, and serves us all as a nation poorly.""Let’s enable a new way of politics that turns our elected officials’ eyes back to their home states and away from the money. Under the Fair Elections Now Act, candidates for Congress would be able to run competitive campaigns for office on a blend of limited public funds and a match on small dollar donations raised from their home state. Candidates would be freed from the endless chase for campaign cash and able to focus their time solely on addressing our nation’s challenges."Click here to read the full letter and see the ad in Roll Call.
