A Way to Clean Up Politics

Submitted by Monica Rober on Mon, 03/08/2010 - 15:22

Former Reps. Bill Hudnut (R-Ind.) and Andy Jacobs (D-Ind.) discuss the Fair Elections Now act and Sen. Evan Bayh's (D-Ind.) decision to co-sponsor the legislation in a recent Op-Ed in the Indianapolis Star."It's time we put an end to this race for campaign cash and the countless compromises it entails. How do we do it? Bayh wisely points us in the right direction: 'Congress and state legislators should . . . consider incentives, including public matching funds for smaller contributions, to expand democratic participation and increase the influence of small donors relative to corporations and other special interests."'"The only way to fundamentally change the dysfunctional dynamic of our elections is to restore 'purchasing power' to the American people through a voluntary public funding system that rewards candidates who raise money only from small, in-state donations. By providing a way out of the chase for big special interest money, such a program would make ordinary Americans the true stakeholders in our government."Click here to read the full Op-Ed.
