Campaign Coffers Grow as Health Care Debate Flares

Submitted by Monica Rober on Mon, 08/31/2009 - 19:49

In a recent article, The San Antonio Express-News focuses on the huge amount of cash flowing into congressional campaign warchests from the health care industry, and argues it could sway the health care reform debate. One Congressman, Rep. Charlie Gonzalez (D-Texas) argues that if you want to avoid the possibility of corruption, you need to look to public financing of elections."Gonzalez said in many cases, special interests, like citizens, are entitled to contribute.“They are contributing so that there is some sort of access to you, but the truth is everyone has access. The problem comes when an elected official restricts access to contributions. That is corruption,” Gonzalez said.“If you want to do away with all of this, then you need public financing of elections. And I would support that,” Gonzalez said."
