Newest Senator Takes on Campaign Finance Reform

Democrat Al Franken is set to be sworn into the Senate next week as Minnesota's second senator. As a member of the Judiciary Committee, one of his first acts in office will be to interview U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor at her confirmation hearing. Franken intends to use this opportunity to ask Sotomayor about campaign finance reform.

"Interviewed on Minnesota Public Radio this morning, Franken said he is concerned about the role of corporate money in political races and would quiz Sotomayor on constitutional barriers to public financing of campaigns."

I will not support any candidate for public ofice unless he/she agrees to publicly support Clean Elections and not accept one cent otherwise.

I sent the following note to Franken recently. I won't pretend that it made a difference but it illustrates how a candidate might respond to a sufficient number of similar comments from supporters.

"I will only make donations to candidates who declare in writing that they will champion and sponsor strong legislation for publicly financed campaigns and non-partisan redistricting. I believe many reform activists feel likewise."
Thanks,

This could be the heart of a simple and influential movement.
