Prioritizing Fair Elections

Submitted by Monica Rober on Tue, 01/13/2009 - 15:07

Mark Green, President of Air America Radio, has posted a list of 10 goals for the Obama administration. The list, “Progressive Patriotism,” is a collaborative effort by Green and John Podesta, head of the Obama Transition Team, to pool the ideas of progressive leaders and boil them down to 10 guiding principles for the administration. Situated at number 2 on the list is an issue that we here at Public Campaign are well acquainted with – enhancing democracy by removing special interest influence. Although reforms of this nature may not always be given their due, Green understands that they provide a foundation for other progressive endeavors to take flight. He says: “Pro-democracy reforms often take a back seat - in campaigns and governance - to bread-and-butter, life-and-death issues such as economy, war and health. But process is policy, especially if a flawed democracy allows big commercial interests in the legislative and administrative arenas to stymie change.”  As we’ve said in the past, removing big moneyed interests allows for better policy formation since it permits lawmakers to legislate without the fear of monetary retribution, and focus on the issues at hand. Green agrees. “[T]he new administration should push for…matching public funding of congressional elections;…national standards in a Fair Elections Now Act;… and ideally establish a "Democracy Czar" within the White House to make sure that all such often-ignored reforms are this time advanced and enacted.” We encourage President-elect Obama and Congress to make this goal a priority and pass the Fair Elections Now Act.
