Alaska Rep. for Clean Elections
Alaska State Rep. Gabrielle LeDoux writes this piece for Stories in the News in support of efforts underway to bring Clean Elections public financing to Alaska's elections as the antidote the corruption stories that have been dominating state news.Clean Elections has been proposed in the legislature, and in the subject of a ballot initiative that will be put to voters this year. And it couldn't come a moment too soon to address rampant concern over the integrity of Alaska's public officials: A Clean Election Law should be the linchpin of a new political climate in Alaska. We have weathered the storms of indictments, public distrust, and scandals. We have enacted comprehensive ethics reforms; are scrutinizing conflicts of interest in regards to who can vote and when; and even modified fund raising practices during session. The next logical step is publicly funded elections-commonly called Clean Elections. This will provide elections that are funded by individuals and public money rather than by special interest groups. Plutarch said "There is no doubt that the real destroyer of the liberties of any people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations, and largess."
