Appoint or Elect

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Mon, 02/04/2008 - 22:09

Jack R. DeWitt, an attorney in Madison, Wisconsin penned this letter to the editor of the Capital Times arguing against the appointment of judges, but for public financing of judicial races, to protect against candidates having to compromise their future performance on the bench just to win their race. Often the question of what do about increasingly partisan and expensive judicial races comes down to appointment vs. public financing. This is an interesting treatment of those two choices.Wisconsin was set to consider a judicial public financing bill in a special session in December, but that bill has since been delayed. All seven members of Wisconsin's Supreme Court have endorsed full public financing of their races.
