Small Steps

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Tue, 01/22/2008 - 21:29

Wisconsin has been moving closer to a public financing program for its judicial races and there's been talk of passing a similar system for legislative races. This editorial in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says that public financing should be the ultimate goal, but there are intermediate steps to take in the meantime since public financing will be a "huge hurdle" for the legislature to clear.Well, we say dream big (and remember that seven other states have passed Clean Elections law so it's well within the realm of possibility) but the intermediate measures they support, including a ban on fundraising while the legislature is considering the state budget, are good ones. The focus on what's wrong with the current system and the need for change will only be good for advancing Clean Elections legislation.
