Hello Houston

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Thu, 12/13/2007 - 19:54

Thanks to Charles Mauch for submitting a good letter to the editor of the Houston Chronicle supporting full public financing of campaigns -- and mentioning us! His full letter after the jump.Cleaning up our 'spills'Copyright 2007 Houston ChronicleAn idea that worksThe article by Dave Eggers in Tuesday's Outlook section, "Money in politics: As with oil, we must live with spills," points out one more time how our financially driven political system is corrupting our politics and our government. Clearly we need a system of public financing. This is not a hopeless "pie-in-the-sky" idea. Eight states and several cities have already initiated various forms of public financing and report that it is working well. A national organization called Public Campaigns is working with the League of Women Voters, Common Cause, various PIRGs and many others to set up networks advocating public financing in every state. The Texas branch of this effort is called True Courage Action Network (TCAN).This is our best hope of reforming the present system, which is totally out of control. It is a fundamental require-ment before we can begin to deal with most of our other very critical problems.CHARLES MAUCHHouston
