Letter from Pleasanton
Joe Ely of Pleasanton, California has this letter in the Contra Costa Times about why his state needs a Clean Elections system. Full letter after the jump.Golden State needs Clean Money systemOn Nov. 27, the Times reminded us that Arnold Schwarzenegger based his 2003 campaign on the claim that California was run by special interests, and how his administration would be different. Indeed, last month's survey by the Public Policy Institute bears out his original claim. They report that 69 percent of Californians believe that their "government is pretty much run by a few big interests instead of for the benefit of the people."The editorial also decries Arnold's hypocrisy and his addiction to huge campaign contributions by wealthy special interests. He can't help it. He's no different than all of our other politicians. They're all creatures of a corrupt system of campaign financing. They can't gain office without selling out to wealthy contributors. And the people of our state are paying for bad health care, energy, consumer (etc.) policies that are tailor-made for those special interestsThe best solution for this pay-to-play system is the voluntary Clean Money system of full public campaign financing for candidates who qualify by demonstrating a broad base of support. At the cost of one penny per day per adult resident, Clean Money is a bargain that has delivered policies and power for the people of Arizona and Maine since 2000. California needs Clean Money.
