Grim Expectations

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Tue, 10/30/2007 - 18:08

Meredith McGehee of the Campaign Legal Center argues for an update to the presidential public financing program by painting a picture of what this long campaign season is going to look like without it. Get ready for big bundlers, endless TV commercials, and a whole lot of more of the same.Comparing the public financing program to an otherwise serviceable car that's not had regular maintenance, McGehee points to the value in the program in terms of emphasizing small donor participation, diversifying the "marketplace of ideas" on the campaign trail, and cutting into the already out of control money race that fuels the ad wars.McGehee is certainly not the first to point out how campaign dynamics change without the public financing check on runaway raising and spending, and we are still a year out from Election Day. Just imagine how tired we'll be of all the realities she describes come next November -- just tired enough to compel our legislators to fix the problem?
