Good Investment
Jon Shure in his piece on NJVoices.com likens a campaign contribution to an "investment" in a candidate -- an investment the donor hopes will pay off down the road: "That's the way it is. It doesn't mean every vote is for sale in every instance. But it does, human nature being what it is, mean access." That's why he says he rooting for the Clean Elections pilot program in New Jersey. To those who trot out that timeworn cliche of "no taxpayer money for politicians," Shure offers the following:Opponents of this (and there are many) say it means the government lines the pockets of candidates. Of course, when the system works as it should, government is` merely "us," and that means we are first in line instead of moneyed businesses and other interest groups. Either we invest in our candidates, or big money interests will. Who would rather reap the rewards?
