Ideas for New Jersey

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Wed, 09/12/2007 - 21:39

Tom Byrne, son of former New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne, offers his thoughts on why New Jersey seems so mired in corruption. First off, elections are much more expensive now and with the need for more money comes the possibility of greater corruption. Byrne thinks there are a number of policies to pursue, including Clean Elections, to address the problem.New Jersey has enjoyed a successful run of its Clean Elections pilot program this year which bodes well for it's future use and expansion. Byrne sees promise in this system and wants additional changes. He encourages greater participation in primaries and a reevaluation of ethics laws that will encourage new people to seek office, and he says if you want to make change, think of running for office yourself. Clean Elections is really part-and-parcel of all of this -- it encourages new people for whom fundraising is a hurdle to seek office, more candidates means more primary interest which encourages voters, and it cleans up ethical issues by eliminating one major cause of concern: campaign money.
