Seeking Signatures
The race is on to get signatures to put a Clean Elections initiative on Alaska's ballot next year, with an Anchorage radio station hosting a signature-gathering party to raise awareness about the proposal, and talk about solutions to the corruption that is grabbing headlines left and right. Said one of the signers of the petition:"I really think this is what Alaska needs. We need less politicians being hauled off in handcuffs and more public input and public awareness of what's going on." Adding even more fuel to the fire of the burgeoning VECO Corp. bribery scandal that has seen many company employees, lobbyists, Alaska state legislators, Rep. Don Young, and Sen. Ted Stevens all come under investigation is the news that Young may find himself the subject of another investigation for taking campaign cash in exchange for bending congressional rules to secure a $10 million earmark for a real estate developer. With legislators giving ample evidence that Alaska must seriously address the unhealthy intersection of money and politics, this Clean Elections initiative is well-timed to receive momentum from voters fed up with the status quo.
