Maine Considers New Disclosure Requirement

Chatter over Maine independent gubernatorial candidate, and Clean Elections candidate, Barbara Merrill's hiring of her husband for her campaign (and his payment of $100,000) has compelled the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices to recommend a vote on requiring public disclosure by Clean Elections candidates of any family members they hire for their campaign. There are those who want to ban the hiring of family members altogether, but this move seems like the best compromise between those who want Clean Elections candidates to have all the options available for campaign staff, and those concerned with preventing even the appearance of Clean Elections funds disproportionately benefiting a candidate's family.
