Some cutbacks in appropriations to the Maine Clean Elections Fund have led the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices to ask for lawmakers' help in directing more money towards the Fund by 2010, the year of the next gubernatorial contest. The Fund has enough on hand to get through the 2008 legislative elections. Clean Elections was passed in 1996 in Maine and now 84% of the Maine legislature was elected using the Clean Elections program.
