Goodwin Writes Again on Council of State

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Tue, 07/17/2007 - 19:04

Former State Rep. and Labor Commissioner candidate Wayne Goodwin has been writing recently in North Carolina papers in support of the public financing pilot program for Council of State races (an extension of the judicial public financing program Goodwin originally co-sponsored). Read his latest article in the Fayetteville Observer. A string of corruption scandals has brought with it an outcry for more a more accountable government in North Carolina and the full public financing solution -- already popular for judicial candidates -- creates that accountability. Public officials shouldn't be expected to solicit money from the very industries and individuals over whom they have oversight: it's an unworkable conflict of interest. The North Carolina House Appropriations Committee is holding a vote on this bill tomorrow to create a pilot program for three Council of State races. If you live in North Carolina, check out this list here to see if your State Rep. is on the committee (3/4 of House members sit on the committee) and give him or her a call in support of this bill!
