The Fight Ahead

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Thu, 04/12/2007 - 21:04

Ari Berman of The Nation surveys both the obstances to full public financing, and its urgent necessity in this article on the unveiling of the Fair Elections Now Act in the Senate, and its companion legislation in the House.  With the conditions good for public financing to gain traction (national scandal combined with good examples of public financing success at the state level) this legislation has the potential to move much farther than its predecessors, though opposition is sure to come from all those interests who benefit from the current private financing mess. As Berman quotes FENA sponsor Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) at the end: "We're not talking about part of the system, we're talking about the system."
