Get What You Pay For
The Capital Times in Madison, Wisconsin carries another positive column in support of Clean Elections -- specifically Sen. Fred Risser's and Rep. Mark Pocan's bill to provide public financing of statewide races. To those who say public funds shouldn't go to campaigns, the author Jack Lohman says: "hogwash." He makes the point that whether we like it or not, we're already paying for our elections -- and getting no benefits for it. In fact, the benefits go to campaign donors and we get the bill: We already have public funding of campaigns, it's just through the back door and at hundreds of times more than if we funded them honestly and upfront. Nor can we argue that money shouldn't be used for candidates we don't agree with, because that too is happening every day through the same back door. And of course, with Clean Elections you get the benefit you're paying for: representation and accountability from your elected officials.
