Debate over Improving Maine's Law

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Thu, 03/29/2007 - 19:59

Lawmakers and activists in Maine are re-examining the state's successful and popular Clean Elections program to look at ways to both ensure that candidates who receive Clean Elections funding have demonstrated sufficient support, and that the program is fiscally sound.  The debate is over how many $5 qualifying contributions a candidate must collect to qualify for public funding, and whether that number should be raised to reflect a greater measure of public support. Of particular concern is the gubernatorial race, the costs of which are generally greater than a statewide legislative race. Clean Elections is popular both among Mainers and among lawmakers -- the majority of the state legislature is made up of officials who ran Clean. It's good to see debate around keeping the system healthy and up to date, we'll let you know what develops!
