Possible Changes to AZ Clean Elections Law

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Tue, 03/06/2007 - 14:50

Arizona's House of Representatives is mulling changes to the state's Clean Elections law. Among the provisions of House Bill 2690, which would need approval of two-thirds of both the State House and Senate before becoming law, are an increase in funding for Clean Elections candidates, and higher limits on the amounts non-Clean Elections candidates may collect from political action committees.  Arizona voters passed Clean Elections in 1998 and since then the law has stood up to numerous efforts within the state legislature to weaken, de-fund, and repeal it even as the percentage of candidates who run under the Clean Elections system gets bigger every election cycle.
