Big Sky, Clean Money

Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Mon, 02/26/2007 - 19:05

Montana State Rep. Wanda Grinde (D-Billings) has begun the work of moving HB 760, a Clean Elections bill, through the Montana legislature. Modeled on the Clean Elections systems in Maine, Arizona, and elsewhere in the country, Grinde's proposal provide a full public financing option for state legislative candidates funded by a voluntary tax check-off.  The Montana League of Women Voters and Montana Common Cause both voiced support for the bill. In her testimony to the House State Administration Committee, Grinde voiced her hopes for a Clean Elections law: "This law makes candidates spend their time talking to constituents instead of raising money. Elections should be about voters."
