Public Finacing and the Primaries
Byron Williams, writing at the Huffington Post, explores the rationale behind moving the date of California's presidential primary earlier in the year, and argues that if the intent is to make California more relevant on the electoral scene, and encourage a greater diversity of participation then an earlier primary should be coupled with a move to Clean Elections policy. Williams cites successful Clean Elections systems already in place and the ability of a public financing system to invite broader and more meaningful participation in the political process by citizens who can't participate in the current wealth primary. As Public Campaign's Nick Nyhart tells Williams "there is no diversity in who writes the checks" under the current system, and a fundamental change to the campaign finance system is in order to bring real diversity out.
