Tossing the Special Interests
Both Gov. Chris Gregoire (D-WA) and state Rep Shay Schual-Berke (D-Normandy Park) are working on legislation that would bring judicial Clean Elections to judicial races in Washington state reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer this morning. "I want to make sure that our high-court justices remain impartial, fair and independent of special interests," said Rep. Schual-Berke, about the legislation. And a system of judicial Clean Elections would do just that. North Carolina has had a similar system in place since 2004 which has seen great success. In 2006, five of the six winners running in the state’s top judicial races used the system, according to Democracy North Carolina. An analysis of the 2004 campaigns showed that judicial candidates relied on attorneys and special-interest groups for less than 14 percent of their non-family funds, compared to 73 percent for candidates in 2002, before the reform.
