Ending Legalized Bribery

Submitted by Adam_Smith on Wed, 01/17/2007 - 17:07

NPR commentator Robert Reich hit the nail on the head this morning when he said on Marketplace:  “The real scandal in Washington is the everyday bribery that remains legal. I'm talking about campaign contributions given for legislative favors — a particular provision in this or that bill, an amendment here, an earmarked appropriation there.”  He says that the recent ethics and lobbying bill passed in the House doesn’t do enough and “the only way to stop this system of legalized bribery is to cut it off at its core.” One way to do that, he notes, is through the public financing of elections. Public financing, or Clean Elections, would give elections back to voters and out of the hands of big money contributors.
